 Program » Overview

The Leadership Tompkins program is comprised of three elements over an academic year:

KICK-OFF RETREAT

SCHEDUED MONTHLY SESSIONS

COMMUNITY ACTION PROJECT (CAP)

The year is capped by an elegant GRADUATION DINNER CELEBRATION.

The two-day kick-off retreat in September quickly transforms the newly assembled group into a team, and provides the knowledge necessary to succeed in Leadership Tompkins. Participants focus on:

  • Increasing their understanding of their leadership strengths and style
  • How Tompkins County rates in nine facets of community health
  • Becoming acquainted with the other participants, both as individuals and as community resources
  • How, in self-selected teams, they might work together to make Tompkins County a stronger, more inclusive community through their CAPs.

Scheduled sessions are held full days once per month, October through June. There are generally two topics per day, during which participants meet with community leaders to discuss topics of current interest and participate in experiential leadership exercises.

Meetings are held throughout Tompkins County. We meet in locations that are relevant to the session topics and welcome the opportunity to take tours whenever possible. We thank our Leadership Tompkins supporters who host meetings at their locations, or provide sponsorship of breaks and/or lunches for the group. If you are interested in supporting a meeting, please contact us.

Community Action Projects (CAPs) give participants a chance to begin making a difference in the community in a supportive learning environment. Through the process of selecting an area of need, connecting with community partners, working together toward a team goal, and delivering an outcome, participants

  • Discover the importance of passion and vision
  • Develop an appreciation of the amount of work necessary to bring a vision to life
  • Learn valuable time management and group dynamics lessons
  • Forge strong bonds that serve them well throughout their professional and service careers
